# unauthorized

> Public API error unauthorized — authentication failed or no API credential was provided (HTTP 401).

| - | - |
| **Code** | `unauthorized` |
| **HTTP status** | `401 Unauthorized` |
| **Retryable** | No |

## What it means

No valid API credential was provided with the request. The response is intentionally the same whether the credential was missing, malformed, or unknown, so the API cannot be used to probe which keys exist.

A valid key sent to the other region's host also returns this code. Use the
[regional host](/developers/v1/regions) assigned to your organization.

## What to do

* Confirm the request sends a credential in a supported form (API key or bearer token) and that the `Authorization` header is well-formed.
* Verify the key value was copied completely — secrets are shown once at creation and cannot be retrieved later.
* Confirm the request uses the organization's regional `/v1` host. See [Regions](/developers/v1/regions).
* If the key may have been disabled, expired, or revoked, create or rotate a credential in the Developer Hub and retry with the new secret.
